Subway Chain to Open Second San Diego Cafe Concept Store in Mission Hills

Subway Chain to Open Second San Diego Cafe in Mission Hills - Kandessa Media

Subway will open a second café concept location in San Diego, Calif. this week. Franchise partners Raghu and Rohit Marwaha already operate a Subway Café store at 1111 6th Ave in the bustling Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego. Franchise partners Raghu and Rohit Marwaha opened the upscale Subway restaurant in September.

The new Subway Café will be located at 440 N. Washington Street in the Mission Hills area of San Diego, Calif. and will open November 16.

With features like WI-FI, DirectTV, and an expanded menu that includes Seattle's Best coffee, espresso-based beverages and smoothies, Subway seems to be taking a page from the McDonald's store upgrade, albeit slowly and selectively. The U.S. remodel of McDonald's over the last decade is being replicated in Canada with the new red blade design of McDonald's Canada.

Subway is now the largest quick serve chain with over 35,000 locations in 98 countries. However, most existing stores are in small box design and would not be able to be retrofitted, regardless of any future strategy related to the Subway Café concept.

Ad Age reported earlier this year that the chain plans to have 10 cafe concept stores built this year, just a fraction of the 2,000 new stores that the Subway chain will open in 2011.

“It is not uncommon to have a rush of customers at 2:00 a.m. on the weekends,” says franchise partner Marwaha. He says that customers in the Gaslamp Quarter are quite receptive to the made-to-order healthy breakfast options, boding well for the new Mission Hills store that will  open tomorrow.

Les Winograd, a spokesman for the Milford, Conn.-based Subway chain says the first  Subway Café opened in Alexandria, Va. The concept arose out of Subway's desire to address the needs of landlords in non-traditional locations, like office buildings, campuses and hospitals.

Winograd says that Subway has opened 20 Subway Cafés this year. "As the Café concept is a small scale test, and all our locations are franchised, the plan is to add locations on a case by case basis, as long as it’s the right fit for the site," he tells Quick Serve Leader.
